Linking Detectors to Charts 🔗

Need some context?   Detectors and Alerts

Linking detectors to charts displays alert status in dashboards and lets an alert responder navigate directly to dashboards from the alert dialog box.

Note

Because you can’t modify built-in dashboards, you can only link detectors to charts in custom or user dashboards.

Displaying the state of a linked detector 🔗

Linked detectors color the border of the charts, data tables, and bell icons with the color of the highest alert severity for all detectors linked to that chart. This at-a-glance interpretation of charts and dashboards means that alert responders can diagnose issues more quickly. A green border means there are no active alerts. If there is no border, then the chart has no linked detectors.

Linking a detector to a chart 🔗

Whenever you create a detector, you may then want to link the detector to a chart for more visibility into alerts based on the chart data. You can link a chart to one or many detectors.

There are two ways to link a detector to a chart.

Linking via the Detector menu 🔗

To link a detector to a chart, open the Detector menu (bell icon) for a chart in a dashboard, then select Link detector.

Depending on the plots in the chart, you may see one or more related detectors with similar metric usage.

Select a detector name from this list to link that detector to the chart. A linked detector is differentiated from other plot types by the black bell icon next to the linked detector name.

This opens the chart in the Chart Builder and puts the focus in the detector entry field. You need to know at least a partial name of the detector.

As you start typing the detector name, the dropdown menu will autofill, limiting suggestions to detectors. Select the suggested detector name to link that detector to the chart.

Note

The Detector menu in the Chart Builder has identical functionality to the Detector menu for a chart in a dashboard (discussed above).

Unlinking a detector from a chart 🔗

In the Plot Editor tab of the Chart Builder, select Delete from the plot line Actions menu to delete the linked detector.

Listing active alerts and linked detectors 🔗

When you open the Detector menu (either for a chart in a dashboard or in the Chart Builder), you may see one or more active alerts, and one or more linked detectors that have already been linked to this chart.

Listing linked detectors on the Detector menu 🔗

If there are Linked Detectors listed on the Detector menu, the detector’s name with the color of the highest alert severity for that chart displays in this list.

Listing charts linked to a detector 🔗

In the Plot Editor tab of the Chart Builder, select Detector info from the plot line Actions menu to view the linked detector information.

The Detector Info dialog box lists all of the charts (with dashboard name and group name for context) that are linked to this detector.
