Use Log Data in SignalFx 🔗

Much of what is stored in log files are metrics: counters for errors or logins, for example. If you’re used to looking for information in log files, SignalFx can help you transform those logs into time series metrics, and plot them on charts or alert on patterns within them.

One way to turn logs into metrics is to use the tail plugin for collectd. This plugin reads log files, and can count occurrences of log lines that you identify using regular expressions. This is especially useful for measuring the frequency of particular errors.

Another way to transform logs into metrics is to use Heka, a stream-processing product created by Mozilla. Clever, a SignalFx customer, created a filter that sends Heka’s output into SignalFx. Read more about the SignalFx filter for Heka.
